Buyers by location
Virginia's private equity firms are spread across the state, from Northern Virginia to Charlottesville, Roanoke and Virginia Beach, and their focus often follows that geography.
In Northern Virginia, close to the federal government, several firms specialize in IT services, cybersecurity and companies that serve government and regulated customers. Owners of government services businesses will find buyers here who already understand contract vehicles, renewals and security requirements.
Elsewhere in the state, firms back industrial, environmental, home services and specialty contracting businesses, and one permanent-capital holding company buys only Virginia businesses.
The mix of buyers is broad. It includes a publicly traded business development company that provides both debt and equity, a small firm built to hold companies for the long term, a growth equity investor and traditional buyout funds. Most work with companies of roughly $1 million to $25 million of EBITDA.
Being close to the buyer can make early meetings and diligence easier. Still, every firm here buys outside Virginia, and many active buyers of Virginia companies are based in other states. The better questions are whether a firm has bought businesses like yours, at your size, and what happened to the founders and managers after closing.
The profiles below are built to answer those questions. Each one lists the firm's announced deals from the last two years, with dates and links to the source, along with its stated size range and current portfolio, so an owner can quickly see which Virginia firms are active in their industry.
Greymont is paid by buyers, never by owners. Greymont can help Virginia owners compare these firms with national buyers active in the Mid-Atlantic and find the right fit.
